This is the latest of my series of paintings of the Lancaster Canal around the Preston area. I have walked this part of the canal many times and each time I walk it, I find another vista to paint. I have always been attracted to painting water and reflections.

I painted this from photographs I took while on a ferry across Derwentwater one summer’s day. Walla Crag is the first peak you see while right in the background is the classic view of Blencathra which is one of the most northerly Cumbrian mountains.

This view is looking north towards Haslam Park which is to the left. I was attracted to the way the low sun was catching the bank on the left but leaving the right hand side and most of the barge in shadow, just hopefully leading the eye around the bend and down the towpath.

This bridge is number 16 on the Lancaster Canal at Cottam in Preston. I have often walked past this bridge but this particular time I was fascinated by the light catching the buildings on the left through the trees.
